10 Reasons To Elope

Updated: Mar 2

When it comes to planning a wedding, there are a lot of decisions that have to be made. If you're reading this blog then you are possibly considering if eloping is right for you. While there are definitely more than 10 reasons to elope, these are some of the top reasons couples have decided that eloping was right for them. If you are not sure, read through this list. If you agree with at least half of the reasons, then you should really consider eloping.

1) You Want The Focus To Be On You

When asking couples from past elopements why they decided to elope, they all expressed that they wanted it to be about them. Traditional weddings makes it hard to fully be present in the moment, to really just enjoy the day with each other. "We didn't want to have to worry about timelines and having to do this because this person wanted to, or the next thing done on a wedding day is this, so we better go do it", one couple said. "We wanted a day where we could literally just be lost in the moment; nothing else mattered."

2) You Want Something Intimate And Meaningful

Many people have traditional weddings because they want all their friends and family there. There can definitely be a fun side to that. Wedding Crashers and My Big Fat Greek Wedding, show just how fun that can be. There can also be a downside. Have you ever noticed if the couple even gets to eat, and if so, were they rushed because guest after guest wanted to talk to them? Don't even mention the glass game (if someone taps on their glass then the couple has to stand up and kiss). I have seen many times when the couple gets upset because guests keep tapping their glasses and won't let them eat.

Many couples that have traditional weddings say a lot of it was a blur. It can be quite the chore to make rounds to all the guests! Couples that elope rather have longer intimate moments with those closest to them.

3) You Are Explorers

Beautiful venues are great to have, but your soul is calling for something more! Most couples that elope are adventurous. They love new places and having unique experiences. Material items are not really their thing, they will take an experience over the fluff any day.

Eloping also opens doors for where yo can be married. When you have a large guest list, you have to find a place that will accommodate those guests. If you want some adventure but can't because many of your guests are either not into that or physically cannot, then eloping is definitely right for you. You want to hike 5miles to this incredible spot, go for it! You want to kayak then rock climb? Sure! Maybe yo want to rock crawl out to where it's just you and the whispers of nature. Do it!

4) Wedding Planning Is Too Stressful

It's no secret. Wedding planning can be very stressful. There's a reason why so many people carry around those stressful binders! There will be questions after questions to answer. From, how big should your wedding party be to which napkins should we use for the reception.

It's your big day. You both are getting married to celebrate your love and to move on to the next chapter in your lives. You should be able to enjoy the experience and choose what matters to you most. If something is not important to you, then there's no reason why you should have to include it on your big day.

5) You Want To Avoid Drama

If you're in need of a good laugh, then the dress fitting scene on Bridesmaids should be your go to . Movies make all the drama that can come with a wedding funny. Truth is though, no one is laughing in real life. I have seen too many couples in tears on their wedding day.

If that's not your scene, then there's nothing saying you cannot do something different. You want to say your vows privately on a beach somewhere? Go for it. Many people will share their opinions on your day, but it comes down to this; there is no right way to get married.

6) You Want To Save Money

Weddings can ad dup to be quite the cost. We're talking about a down payment for a house! The average cost for a US wedding was $33,900 in 2019, according to The Knot.

If this is not in your budget, or it is, but you just don't want to spend that much on a wedding; consider eloping.

Yo can have one of the most magical experiences you could dream of and still not pay half as much as the average wedding cost.

7) You want something different

This might be one of my all time favorite reasons to elope. Your love story isn't like everyone else's, so why do what everyone else is doing?

This is typically the reason why most couples decide to elope. The need that deeper experience. To run free, in a dress and hiking boots?? To celebrate the core aspects of what makes them the couple that they are!

Don't be afraid to express your individuality as a couple. The unique weddings are usually the ones that have people saying, "WOW!"

8) A Big Wedding Doesn't Feel Right

While you may know many people, how well do yo really know them? For some couples it can be awkward and uncomfortable to force small talk with hundreds of people you somewhat know, on a day that was supposed to be one of the most intimate days of your lives.

Maybe loud crowds are not your thing. Keep in mind you can bring family and friends that are closest to you. Celebrate in a way that represents you as a couple. The most important thing is that yo both are comfortable and in an environment that you will be able to enjoy.

9) Less Restrictions

While this is more of a recent reason, it is quickly changing the face of weddings. Many weddings were cancelled or postponed due to the pandemic. Venues are constantly having to change their restrictions. Many couples turned to eloping just so they could be married. If planning a wedding during a pandemic is not something you want to attempt, consider eloping.

10) You Want Amazing Photos

As a wedding photographer I always recommend this, if intimate photos are a couple's top priority. These couples want photos that reflect who they truly are as a couple, not forced poses. Couples that elope will receive far more images of just them because that's where the focus and time is.

If videography is something you want as well, your video will become much more personalized and cinematic on an elopement day. Traditional weddings only have time to create highlight films. Elopements allow the space for a videographer to fully focus on the couple, to build on their story and truly showcase that. Ever thought about having your own mini movie? Elopements make it happen!
