A Grand Teton Proposal

Imagine you are taking a trip with your significant other and a few friends. You decide it would be fun to go on a cross country road trip and hit up a few national parks. You end up in Grand Teton National Park for the night. You set up camp, your boyfriend tells you that he arranged to have dinner with a park ranger. How cool is that?! Little do you know that the entire thing is made up and instead you are being proposed to!

Sounds like an amazing dream right? What makes this little tale even better is that it’s a true story! This is the story of John and Katie.

John and Katie decided to take a trip from their home in Texas and spend a week in Big Sky, Montana with her parents. They thought it would be fun to make it a cross country road trip with two of their close friends. Little did Katie know that John was planning on proposing to her on this trip. They were going to a couple of different national parks but John felt that Grand Teton would be the perfect place to propose.

John reached out to me a few months before the trip. We discussed what his plan was and some possible locations that would be ideal for popping the question. At first we had considered Jenny Lake, after some thought John decided Schwabacher Landing was the spot. This ended up being perfect as Jenny Lake is rather of a high traffic spot. We then discussed what our story would be in hopes of not giving any clues to Katie of what may happen.

John came up with this idea of saying he would arrange dinner with a Park Ranger. It would be outside on one of the park’s locations and the ranger would give them a tour of the area. This should seriously be a thing, how cool would that be?!

I arrived a day early to do some detailed location scouting. If you are not familiar with the area, Schwabacher Landing is a rather large area. There are two different trail entrances. The first one has a smaller parking lot and appears to be not the main entrance. If you continue going down the gravel road, there is a larger lot with bathrooms. This area seemed to have more traffic. It was right along the river with the mountains in the background. This was the kind of scenery John was envisioning for the proposal. The only problem was, there wasn’t really a good space to stop, get down on one knee and propose. Trees blocked the view of the mountains in many spots, there were lots of people coming and going.

Now, I know I was scouting this area in the morning. They were not going to be meeting up with me until the evening. Traffic could change throughout the day. Some key things to keep in mind in a situation like this is that people love sunsets. Grand Teton has some rather epic sunsets as the mountains appear purple as the sunsets. Photographers absolutely love golden hour (sunset). Things are also starting to open back up after the pandemic. People are just chomping at the bit to get out (Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park had a record year last year). Odds are there were going to be a lot of people in the evening as well.

So I made my way back to the first entrance with the smaller lot. There is a nice wide trail. There was an open view of the river and the mountains in the background. If you have seen the pictures all over Google of the Tetons with the reflection of them in the river, this is the spot those images are taken (pro tip, the reflection cannot be seen at any time of day. Wait closer to evening to get this shot). I looked out further in the distance. Not too far down the trail I could see a larger clearing. You could get right on the water with the view of the mountains directly behind. There was also plenty of good spots for me to hide but still get a great shot of the entire event. This was it!

By this point, John had turned over all communication to his friend. It would look suspicious if some random person kept texting him on the trip after all. I shared pin drops and as much detailed descriptions of the spot as possible. The service was rather hit and miss in this area, so I was a little nervous of how it would all turn out.

The time had come for them to arrive. When I heard them coming I started pretending I was taking up close shots of rocks and wildlife that was around me. Nature photographers are all over this area so that shouldn’t be too suspicious. I brought a zoom lens so I could be further away and not bring attention to myself. John had stopped near the water, pretended to tie his shoe (He had to do this a few times before Katie stopped to see what he was doing). Then he pulled out a ring and proposed! Katie’s reaction was absolutely priceless!

Being able to witness this was such an incredible experience. I am so thankful John chose me to help be a part of this.

Here is a look into this unforgettable moment.
